Distance Learning

I hope you and your families are all doing well and keeping safe. This is an incredibly stressful time and affects each of us differently. Keeping this in mind and adhering to the Ministry's suggestion of providing 5 hours of academics every week, both myself and Mr. Graitson have worked together to put together a weekly suggested work load. Please know that any of the work given out is up to your discretion and is not considered "mandatory". However, I will be providing some feedback, and some of the work can also be used towards improving final marks.

As this only covers Math and Language, students can anticipate about an hour per subject, per week. This allows time to be spent on the other focus subjects (French, social studies and Science).  Math Priority/Focus: We have created a slide deck that will be added to each week. Slides will be labelled according to the weekly lesson. Here students will see the lesson/instruction and practice work for that week. The directions for that week will be stated in the slide deck. Students are asked to share their math work in their "Math Folder" through Google Drive/Hapara.  Extras (practice work to build competency and skills)  Khan Academy Powerstudent.org Math Antics Language Priority/Focus Novel Study - The One and Only Ivan Students are familiar with this work process. There is a Google Slide deck shared with them with the work expectations on each section of this novel. However, since we cannot read this aloud together, we have recorded an audio clip of the section and attached it to the slide deck. For example, if your child is working on section 7, he/she looks for that slide, clicks the audio file, listens to the section of the novel and then answers the following questions. This will also be updated weekly so students are working at the same pace. Completed work (done in a google doc) can be dropped in their Language folder. Students are asked to keep ONE running google doc and separate their work with sub headings for each section.  Extras Daily Journal Read Creative writing  I anticipate questions and concerns this first week as everyone reviews the work/expectations and figures out how to submit work. I will be available to answer those questions and help them sort things out through email (if needed I will call your child to answer questions) and Zoom.

ZOOM and Harry Potter Read Aloud

The Junior teachers at St. Gabe have worked out a schedule so that we are all available to meet with the students, check in and answer questions - all on separate days as to not overwhelm the kids or families. Our class will host meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays at 3pm. These meetings are not an expectation. The session will begin with answering questions and checking in and the rest of the time will be allotted to reading from Harry Potter. Login information has already been shared with your child through Hapara, as I want to protect our privacy I will not be posting it here, but can send anyone the info who is having trouble accessing it.
